Conjugating the -AR verb 'jugar'
Yo juego, Tú juegas, Él/Ella juega
The verb 'jugar' is a special -AR verb. The 'u' changes to 'ue' for 'yo', 'tú', and 'él/ella'. You must change the ending of the verb to match who is doing the playing.

jugar + a + el = jugar al
In Spanish, when you say you play a sport, you say 'jugar a' the sport. Since 'fútbol' is a masculine word ('el fútbol'), 'a' and 'el' combine to make 'al'. You always say 'jugar al fútbol'.
