Grammar Rules & Patterns
Rule 1: Use SER for 'What It Is'
Ser = What something is like (color, size, who you are).
Use 'ser' for things that are part of what something is. A ball is round. You are a student.
Rule 2: Use ESTAR for 'How or Where It Is'
Estar = How something feels or where it is located.
Use 'estar' for feelings and locations. I am happy. The pencil is on the desk.
Rule 3: One or Many?
Use 'es' or 'está' for one thing. Use 'son' or 'están' for many things.
One dog: El perro es grande. Many dogs: Los perros son grandes.
