Grammar Rules & Patterns

The 'Yo' Rule Yo + voy When you talk about yourself going somewhere, always use 'voy'. The 'Tú' Rule Tú + vas When you talk about a friend ('you') going somewhere, always use 'vas'. The 'Él/Ella' Rule Él / Ella + va When you talk about a boy ('él') or a girl ('ella') going somewhere, use 'va'. The Place Rule ir + a + lugar (place) After using 'voy', 'vas', or 'va', add the word 'a' before you say the place.
