Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Numerical ExpressionA mathematical phrase that contains numbers and operation symbols (like +, -, ×, ÷) but does not have an equality sign (=).3.5 + 2.1 × 4
DecimalA number that uses a decimal point to represent a whole number and fractional parts (tenths, hundredths, thousandths, etc.).0.75, 12.3, 5.001
Order of OperationsA set of rules that dictate the sequence in which mathematical operations should be performed to ensure a single, correct answer. Often remembered by the acronym PEMDAS or BODMAS.In 2 + 3 × 4, multiplication (3 × 4) is done before addition (2 + 12).
TermA single number or a product/quotient of numbers within an expression, separated by addition or subtraction signs.In the expression 3.5 + 2.1 × 4, '3.5' is a term and '2.1 × 4' i...

Core Formulas
Order of Operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS)
1. Parentheses/Brackets (P/B)
2. Exponents/Orders (E/O)
3. Multiplication and Division (M/D) from left to right
4. Addition and Subtraction (A/S) from left to right
This universal rule ensures consistency in evaluating expressions. Always perform operations inside grouping symbols first, then exponents, then multiplication and division (whichever comes first from left to right), and finally addition and subtraction (whichever comes first from left to right).
Decimal Addition and Subtraction Rule
Align the decimal points vertically, then add or subtract the numbers as you would with whole numbers. Place the decimal point in the answer directly below the aligned decimal points.
This rule is critical for maintaining correct place value when c...
