Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify the place value of digits in numbers up to billions. Apply strategies to compare numbers with different numbers of digits. Apply strategies to compare numbers with the same number of digits, starting from the leftmost digit. Use comparison symbols (>, <, =) correctly to compare numbers up to billions. Order a set of numbers up to billions from least to greatest or greatest to least. Explain the reasoning behind comparing large numbers based on place value. Have you ever wondered which country has a larger population, or which planet is further from the sun? 🌍 Knowing how to compare really big numbers helps us understand the world around us! In this lesson, you'll learn how to compare numbers that are incredibly large, all the way up...

Core Formulas

Rule for Comparing Numbers with Different Numbers of Digits If two numbers have a different number of digits, the number with more digits is always the greater number. This is the first and easiest rule to apply. Count the digits in each number. The one with more digits is automatically larger, regardless of the values of the digits themselves. For example, a 10-digit number (like 1,000,000,000) is always greater than a 9-digit number (like 999,999,999). Rule for Comparing Numbers with the Same Number of Digits To compare two numbers with the same number of digits, start comparing the digits from the leftmost (highest place value) position. The first position where the digits differ determines which number is greater. The number with the larger digit in that position is the gr...
