Introduction & Learning Objectives
Learning Objectives
Identify and recall standard units of time (seconds, minutes, hours, days).
Convert between different units of time (e.g., minutes to hours, hours to minutes).
Accurately add mixed time units (e.g., hours and minutes) without conversion errors.
Accurately subtract mixed time units, including situations requiring 'borrowing' across units.
Solve real-world problems involving the addition and subtraction of mixed time units.
Recognize and correct common errors when performing time calculations.
Ever wonder how much time you spend on homework if you work for 45 minutes on Monday and 1 hour 30 minutes on Tuesday? ⏰ Let's find out!
In this lesson, you'll learn how to add and subtract different units of time, like hours and minutes, or minu...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Time UnitA standard measure for duration, such as a second, minute, hour, or day.A 'minute' is a common time unit used to measure short durations.
Mixed Time UnitsA measurement of time expressed using more than one unit simultaneously, like '2 hours 30 minutes'.If a movie is '1 hour 45 minutes' long, that is an example of mixed time units.
Conversion FactorA ratio used to convert a quantity from one unit to another, such as '60 minutes = 1 hour'.To convert hours to minutes, you multiply by the conversion factor of 60 minutes per hour.
Carrying (in time addition)The process where, if the sum of a smaller time unit (like minutes) exceeds its conversion factor (60), the excess is converted and added to the next larger unit (like h...

Core Formulas
Time Unit Conversions
$1 \text{ minute} = 60 \text{ seconds}$
$1 \text{ hour} = 60 \text{ minutes}$
$1 \text{ day} = 24 \text{ hours}$
These are the fundamental conversion factors for common time units. Use them to convert between units when needed, either before or after performing addition or subtraction.
Adding Mixed Time Units
1. Align units vertically.
2. Add the smallest units (e.g., seconds) first.
3. If the sum of a unit is 60 or more, subtract 60 (or a multiple of 60) and 'carry' 1 (or the corresponding number) to the next larger unit.
4. Repeat for all units.
When adding mixed time units, treat each unit column separately. Remember to 'carry over' any amount that equals or exceeds the conversion factor for that unit (e.g., 60 minutes become...
