Reading the Hour Hand The hour hand indicates the current hour. If it is between two numbers, the hour is the number it has *just passed*. Always look at the number the hour hand has most recently crossed. For example, if it's between 4 and 5, the hour is 4, not 5. Reading the Minute Hand Each number on the clock face represents a multiple of 5 minutes for the minute hand. Each small tick mark represents 1 minute.
