Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Define elapsed time and identify start and end times in a given scenario. Calculate elapsed time within the same hour using subtraction or counting on. Calculate elapsed time across different hours but within the same AM/PM period. Calculate elapsed time that crosses between AM and PM. Use a number line or T-chart strategy to find elapsed time. Solve real-world word problems involving elapsed time. Ever wondered how long your favorite movie lasts or how much time you spend playing your favorite game? ⏰ Knowing how to calculate this 'time in between' is super useful! In this lesson, you'll learn all about elapsed time – the duration from when something starts to when it finishes. Understanding elapsed time helps you plan your day, manage y...

Core Formulas

Direct Subtraction (with Regrouping) To find elapsed time, subtract the start time from the end time. If the minutes of the start time are greater than the minutes of the end time, you must 'regroup' or 'borrow' 1 hour (60 minutes) from the hours column of the end time. This method is useful when you can set up the times vertically like a subtraction problem. Remember that you borrow 60 minutes, not 100, when regrouping from hours to minutes. Counting On / Jump Strategy Start at the given start time and 'jump' forward on a number line or mentally in convenient increments (e.g., to the next hour, by full hours, then by remaining minutes) until you reach the end time. Sum all the jumps to find the total elapsed time. This strategy is excellent for...
