TermDefinitionExample
Analog ClockA clock that shows time using hands that move around a circular face with numbers or markings. The round clock on the wall in your classroom is an analog clock.
Clock FaceThe circular surface of an analog clock, typically marked with numbers 1 through 12 and smaller tick marks for minutes. The numbers '3', '6', '9', and '12' are usually more prominent on the clock face.
Hour HandThe shorter hand on an analog clock that points to the hour.If the hour hand is pointing just past the '3', it means it's past 3 o'clock.
Minute HandThe longer hand on an analog clock that points to the minutes. If the minute hand is pointing directly at the '6', it means it's 30 minutes past the hour.

Core Formulas
Reading the Hour Hand
The hour hand indicates the current hour by pointing to or just past the hour number. If it's between two numbers, the hour is the *smaller* of the two numbers it has just passed.
To determine the hour, look at the hour hand. If it's exactly on a number, it's that hour. If it's between two numbers, it's the hour of the number it has already passed. For example, if it's between 4 and 5, the hour is 4.
Reading the Minute Hand (Multiples of 5)
Each number on the clock face (1 through 12) represents a multiple of 5 minutes when the minute hand points to it. The number of minutes is given by: $\text{Minutes} = \text{Number the minute hand points to} \times 5$.
To find the minutes when the minute hand points directly at a number,...
