Core Formulas
Reading the Hour Hand
If the hour hand is between two numbers, the hour is the *smaller* of the two numbers it has just passed.
This rule helps determine the current hour, especially when the minute hand is past the 6. For example, if the hour hand is between 3 and 4, and the minute hand is at 9, the hour is still 3, not 4.
Reading the Minute Hand
Each number on the clock face (1 through 12) represents $\text{number} \times 5$ minutes past the hour. Each small mark between numbers represents 1 minute.
To find the minutes, multiply the number the minute hand points to by 5. If it points between numbers, count the small marks from the previous number.
12-Hour to 24-Hour Conversion (PM Times)
For PM times (from 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM), add 12 to the hour to get the 24-hour f...
