The Additive Rule
Larger Numeral + Smaller Numeral
When a numeral of smaller value is written after a numeral of larger value, you add their values together. You can also add by repeating a numeral up to three times.
The Subtractive Rule
Larger Numeral - Smaller Numeral
When a smaller numeral (like I or X) is written before a larger numeral, you subtract the smaller value from the larger value. This is a shortcut for writing 4s and 9s.
