Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify if a whole number up to 1,000 is even or odd. Define the terms 'even' and 'odd' using the concept of pairs. Explain why a number is even or odd by looking at the digit in the ones place. Sort a list of numbers into 'even' and 'odd' groups. Apply addition patterns to predict if the sum of two numbers will be even or odd. Model an even or odd number by drawing pairs of objects. Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample Even NumberA whole number that can be split into two equal groups with nothing left over. Every item has a partner. The number 8 is even because you can make 4 pairs (2+2+2+2) or two equal groups of 4. Odd NumberA whole number that has one left over when you try to split it into two equal groups. One item will be without a partner. The number 7 is odd because if you make pairs, you get 3 pairs and 1 is left over (2+2+2+1). PairA group of two things that belong together.A pair of shoes, a pair of gloves, or a pair of dots. DigitAny of the symbols from 0 to 9 that we use to write numbers. The number 52 is made of two digits: 5 and 2. Ones PlaceThe position of the very last digit in a whole number. In the number 463, the digit in the ones place is 3.

Core Formulas

The Ones Place Rule A number is EVEN if its ones place digit is 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8. A number is ODD if its ones place digit is 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9. This is the fastest way to tell if a number is even or odd. You only need to look at the very last digit, no matter how big the number is! Addition Rule 1: Even + Even Even + Even = Even When you add two even numbers together, the answer (the sum) will always be another even number. Addition Rule 2: Odd + Odd Odd + Odd = Even When you add two odd numbers together, the two 'leftover' ones can form a new pair, so the answer is always an even number. Addition Rule 3: Even + Odd Even + Odd = Odd When you add an even number and an odd number, the 'leftover' one from the odd number has no partner, so the...
