Identify the hour and minute hands on an analog clock.
Read the time to the nearest minute on an analog clock.
Read the time on a digital clock.
Match the time shown on an analog clock to the corresponding digital time.
Write the digital time when shown an analog clock.

Have you ever noticed that the clock on the wall looks different from the clock on a phone? 🕰️📱 Let's learn how they both tell the same time!
In this lesson, we will explore two types of clocks: analog (with hands) and digital (with numbers). You will learn how to read both and see how they show the exact same time, just in different ways. This is a super useful skill for knowing when it's time for lunch, recess...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Analog ClockA clock with a face and hands that move around to show the time.The big round clock on a classroom wall.
Digital ClockA clock that shows the time using numbers, usually separated by a colon (:).The time shown on a phone, microwave, or cable box, like 10:30.
Hour HandThe shorter, slower hand on an analog clock that points to the hour.If it points at the 3, the hour is 3.
Minute HandThe longer, faster hand on an analog clock that points to the minutes.If it points at the 6, it means 30 minutes have passed.
HourA unit of time equal to 60 minutes. On an analog clock, these are the big numbers from 1 to 12.The time between 2 o'clock and 3 o'clock is one hour.
MinuteA unit of time equal to 60 seconds. On an analog clock, each small tick mark is one mi...

Core Formulas
Reading the Hour
Hour = \text{The number the short hand has just passed}
Look at the short hour hand. If it's between two numbers, the hour is the smaller number (the one it already passed).
Reading the Minutes
Minutes = \text{Number the long hand points to} \times 5
Look at the long minute hand. Find the big number it's pointing to and multiply that number by 5 to find the minutes.
Digital Time Format
HH:MM
Digital time is always written as Hour, then a colon (:), then the Minutes. If the minutes are less than 10, we write a 0 first (e.g., 8:05).
