I'm thinking of two secret numbers... can you be a number detective and guess what they are using my clues? 🕵️♀️
In this lesson, we will become number detectives! We will learn how to use clues about adding (sum), subtracting (difference), multiplying (product), and dividing (quotient) to find secret pairs of numbers. This is a great...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
SumThe answer you get when you add two or more numbers together. The sum of 4 and 5 is 9, because 4 + 5 = 9.
DifferenceThe answer you get when you subtract a smaller number from a bigger number. It tells you how far apart two numbers are.The difference between 8 and 3 is 5, because 8 - 3 = 5.
ProductThe answer you get when you multiply two or more numbers together. The product of 3 and 4 is 12, because 3 × 4 = 12.
QuotientThe answer you get when you divide one number by another. The quotient of 10 divided by 2 is 5, because 10 ÷ 2 = 5.
Number PairTwo numbers that are used together to solve a problem. The numbers (6, 2) are a number pair.

Core Formulas
The Sum Rule
Number 1 + Number 2 = Sum
Use this to check if two numbers add up to the correct total. This is your first clue in many puzzles.
The Difference Rule
Bigger Number - Smaller Number = Difference
Use this to check how far apart two numbers are. Make sure you always subtract the smaller number from the bigger one.
The Product Rule
Number 1 × Number 2 = Product
Use this to check if two numbers multiply to make the correct total. This is a very powerful clue.
The Guess and Check Strategy
1. List pairs for the first clue. 2. Test pairs with the second clue.
This is the main strategy for solving these puzzles. Make a neat list for one clue (like all the pairs that add to 10), then check that list to see which pair also works for the second clue (like hav...
