Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Define the terms 'sum' and 'difference' correctly. Identify the sum and the difference in a word problem. Use a step-by-step method to find two unknown numbers when their sum and difference are given. Explain the relationship between the sum, the difference, and the two numbers. Check their answer by adding and subtracting the two numbers they found. Solve simple word problems involving finding two numbers from their sum and difference. Imagine you and a friend have 10 cookies in total, but you have 2 more cookies than your friend. How many cookies does each of you have? 🍪🤔 In this lesson, you'll become a math detective! You will learn a special trick to find two secret numbers when you only know how much they are when added to...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample SumThe total you get when you add two or more numbers together. The sum of 4 and 6 is 10 (because 4 + 6 = 10). DifferenceThe result you get when you subtract one number from another. It tells you how much bigger one number is.The difference between 9 and 5 is 4 (because 9 - 5 = 4). Unknown NumbersThe secret numbers in a puzzle that we are trying to find.In the problem 'Two numbers add up to 8', the two numbers are unknown until we solve it (like 1 and 7, or 2 and 6). Larger NumberThe number with the greater value in a pair of numbers.Between 7 and 3, the larger number is 7. Smaller NumberThe number with the lesser value in a pair of numbers.Between 7 and 3, the smaller number is 3. Logical ReasoningUsing clues and step-by-step thinking to solve a problem or...

Core Formulas

Finding the Larger Number Larger Number = (Sum + Difference) / 2 To find the bigger of the two secret numbers, first add the sum and the difference together. Then, divide your answer by 2. Finding the Smaller Number Smaller Number = (Sum - Difference) / 2 To find the smaller of the two secret numbers, first subtract the difference from the sum. Then, divide your answer by 2. The Check-Your-Work Rule Larger Number + Smaller Number = Sum AND Larger Number - Smaller Number = Difference After you find your two numbers, add them to see if you get the original sum. Then, subtract them to see if you get the original difference. If both are correct, you solved the puzzle!
