Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
ProductThe answer you get when you multiply two or more numbers together.In 3 x 4 = 12, the product is 12.
FractionA number that shows a part of a whole or a part of a group.1/2 means one part out of two equal parts.
NumeratorThe top number in a fraction. It tells you how many equal parts you have.In the fraction 3/4, the numerator is 3.
DenominatorThe bottom number in a fraction. It tells you how many equal parts the whole is divided into.In the fraction 3/4, the denominator is 4.
Unit FractionA special fraction where the numerator is always 1. It represents one single equal part of a whole.1/4, 1/8, and 1/10 are all unit fractions.
FactorsThe numbers that are multiplied together to get a product.In 5 x 1/6 = 5/6, the factors are 5 and 1/6.

Core Formulas
The Unit Fraction
\frac{1}{d}
This is the form of any unit fraction. The numerator is always 1, and the denominator 'd' can be any whole number greater than 1.
Multiplying a Whole Number by a Unit Fraction
n \times \frac{1}{d} = \frac{n}{d}
To find the product of a whole number 'n' and a unit fraction '1/d', the whole number 'n' becomes the new numerator, and the denominator 'd' stays the same.
