Learning Objectives
Understand that finding a fraction 'of' a number involves division.
Identify the basic division fact within a larger problem involving a multiple of 10 (e.g., see '6 ÷ 3' in '1/3 of 60').
Use division to find a unit fraction (e.g., 1/2, 1/3, 1/4) of a whole number ending in a zero.
Explain how to use the 'zero trick' to solve division problems with multiples of 10.
Solve one-step word problems that require finding a fraction of a number ending in a zero.
Model finding a fraction of a set using simple diagrams.
If you have a box of 30 crayons and your friend asks for 1/3 of them, how many do you share? 🖍️
In this lesson, we will learn a super-fast trick for finding parts (fractions) of big numbers that end in zero....

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Multiple of 10A whole number that ends in a zero, like 10, 20, 30, or 100. You get these numbers when you multiply a number by 10.40 is a multiple of 10 because 4 x 10 = 40.
Unit FractionA fraction where the top number (the numerator) is 1. It represents one equal part of a whole.1/4 is a unit fraction. It means 'one out of four equal parts'.
DenominatorThe bottom number in a fraction. It tells you how many equal parts the whole is split into.In the fraction 1/5, the denominator is 5. This means the whole is split into 5 equal parts.
The word 'Of'In fraction problems, the word 'of' is a clue that you need to find a part of a number. For unit fractions, this means you will divide.'1/2 of 60' means you need to find out what one-h...

Core Formulas
The 'Fraction Of' Rule
1/d of N = N ÷ d
To find a unit fraction (like 1/d) of any whole number (N), you simply divide the whole number by the denominator (d).
The Zero Trick for Division
(a × 10) ÷ b = (a ÷ b) × 10
When dividing a number ending in zero (like 60) by a single-digit number (like 3), you can temporarily ignore the zero (solve 6 ÷ 3 = 2) and then add the zero back to your answer (20).
