Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
FractionA number that shows a part of a whole. It has a top number (numerator) and a bottom number (denominator).1/4 is a fraction. It means 'one out of four equal parts'.
WholeThe total number of items in a group before you split it into parts.If a problem is about 12 cookies, the 'whole' is 12.
DenominatorThe bottom number in a fraction. It tells you how many equal parts the whole is divided into.In the fraction 1/3, the denominator is 3. This means you will make 3 equal groups.
NumeratorThe top number in a fraction. For our problems today, it will tell us how many of the equal groups we are interested in.In the fraction 1/3, the numerator is 1. This means we want to know the amount in one of the groups.
Unit FractionA fraction where the numerat...

Core Formulas
Finding a Fraction of a Number Rule
\frac{1}{d} \text{ of } n = n \div d
To find a unit fraction of a whole number, you divide the whole number (n) by the denominator (d). The word 'of' tells us to divide.
The Denominator is the Divisor
\text{Whole Number} \div \text{Denominator}
The key to solving these problems is to remember that the bottom number of the fraction (the denominator) is the number you divide by.
