Learning Objectives
Identify the key numbers and question in a multi-digit addition word problem.
Translate a word problem into a vertical addition equation, aligning numbers by place value.
Accurately add two numbers with four or more digits, using regrouping (carrying) when necessary.
Solve multi-step word problems that require adding large numbers.
Write the final answer to a word problem as a complete sentence with the correct label or unit.
Check their answer for reasonableness by using estimation.
A video game master scored 4,550 points in the first level and 3,890 points in the second level. How could we find their total score? 🎮

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Word ProblemA short story that includes numbers and asks a mathematical question."A factory made 1,250 blue cars and 2,380 red cars. How many cars did they make in all?" is a word problem.
SumThe answer you get when you add two or more numbers together. In 1,000 + 500 = 1,500, the sum is 1,500.
Place ValueThe value of a digit based on its position in a number (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands). In the number 5,482, the 5 is in the thousands place, the 4 is in the hundreds place, the 8 is in the tens place, and the 2 is in the ones place.
Regrouping (Carrying)When the sum of a column is 10 or more, you write the ones digit of the sum and 'carry' the tens digit to the next column to the left. When adding 18 + 7, the ones column (8+7) is 15. You write do...

Core Formulas
Vertical Addition Setup
\begin{array}{@{}c@{\;}c@{}c@{}c@{}c} & Th & H & T & O \\ & 1 & 4 & 5 & 8 \\ + & 2 & 1 & 7 & 3 \\ \hline \end{array}
Always line up the numbers vertically so that the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands places are in the same columns. This ensures you are adding digits with the same place value.
The Regrouping Rule
If Column Sum \ge 10, carry the tens digit to the next column left.
When adding a column, if the sum is 10 or more, you cannot write two digits in the answer line for that column. Write the last digit (the ones place) of the sum and add the first digit (the tens place) to the top of the next column to the left.
