When a word problem asks you to combine two amounts, you can set up an addition equation. Identify the two smaller parts, add them together, and you will find the total or whole amount.

To add numbers, write them vertically, lining up the digits by their place value (Ones, Tens, Hundreds). Add the ones column first, then the tens, then the hundreds. Regroup (carry over) anytime a column's sum is 10 or more.
