Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Correctly align three or more numbers with four or more digits according to their place value. Add the digits in the ones column and regroup to the tens column when the sum is 10 or more. Add the digits in the tens, hundreds, and thousands columns, including any regrouped numbers. Accurately calculate the sum of three or more large numbers. Solve word problems that require adding three or more numbers with four or more digits. Use estimation to check if their final answer is reasonable. Imagine you and two friends are collecting bottle caps. If you have 1,245, one friend has 2,180, and another has 1,950, how could you find your giant total? 😮 In this lesson, you will become an expert at adding several big numbers together. We will learn how to keep our...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample Place ValueThe value of a digit based on its position in a number (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands). In the number 6,543, the '6' is in the thousands place and its value is 6,000. AddendsThe numbers that are being added together in an addition problem. In 1,500 + 2,300 + 1,100 = 4,900, the addends are 1,500, 2,300, and 1,100. SumThe answer you get when you add numbers together. The sum of 1,000 + 2,000 + 3,000 is 6,000. AlignmentThe process of lining up numbers vertically so that the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands places are in the same columns. To add 2,468 and 135, you must align the 8 over the 5, the 6 over the 3, and the 4 over the 1. Regrouping (Carrying)Moving a digit to the next higher place value column when the sum in a column is 10 or more.In the...

Core Formulas

The Alignment Rule Line up numbers by place value, not by the first digit. Before adding, stack the numbers so the ones digits are in a column, the tens digits are in a column, and so on. This is the most important step to get the right answer. The Right-to-Left Rule Start adding in the ones column and move left. Always begin your addition with the column on the far right (the ones place). Add that column, regroup if needed, then move one column to the left and repeat. The Regrouping Rule If a column's sum is 10 or more, carry the tens digit. When a column adds up to a number like 18, write the '8' at the bottom of that column and carry the '1' to the top of the next column to the left. Remember to add this carried number!

Challenging
Sara is adding 4,812 + 6,390 + 1,055 + 5,284. She gets the ones column correct (sum is 11, she writes 1, carries 1). In the tens column, she adds 1+1+9+5+8 and gets 24. She writes 4 and carries 2. In the hundreds column, she adds 8+3+0+2 and gets 13. What was her first mistake?
A.She added the ones column wrong.
B.She added the tens column wrong.
C.She forgot to add the carried '2' in the hundreds column.
D.She forgot to carry a number to the thousands column.
