Learning Objectives
Identify the hundreds, tens, and ones values in an expanded form equation.
Combine hundreds, tens, and ones to write a standard three-digit number.
Correctly use a zero as a placeholder when a tens or ones value is missing.
Convert numbers from expanded form when the values are not in order.
Explain that expanded form is a way to break a number into its place value parts.
Write the standard form for any expanded number up to 999.
Imagine you have a box of LEGO® bricks! 🧱 You have big, medium, and small pieces. How do you put them together to build a cool castle? 🏰
We are going to learn how to put number pieces together! This is called converting from expanded form. It helps us understand big numbers better.

TermDefinitionExample
DigitA digit is any single number from 0 to 9. They are like number building blocks. 🧱In the number 153, the digits are 1, 5, and 3.
Place ValuePlace value tells us how much a digit is worth. It depends on where it sits in a number. 🏠In 245, the 2 is in the hundreds place. It means 200.
Expanded FormThis is when we stretch a number out. We show the value of each digit. ↔️The number 321 in expanded form is 300 + 20 + 1.
Standard FormThis is the normal way we write numbers. It's the short and quick way! 👍The standard form for 300 + 20 + 1 is 321.
Placeholder ZeroA zero that holds a place open. It's used when there are no tens or ones. 🍩In 408, the 0 holds the tens place. It means there are zero tens.

Core Formulas
The Place Value Formula
Hundreds + Tens + Ones = Standard Number
Look at the expanded form. Find the hundreds, tens, and ones. Put the digits in the right places to build the number.
The Placeholder Zero Rule
Hundreds + 0 + Ones = H0O
If you don't see a tens number (like 10, 20, 30...), you must put a 0 in the tens place.
