Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
ColumnA straight line of numbers going up and down. We have a ones column and a tens column. In the problem 12 + 34, the 2 and 4 are in the ones column. The 1 and 3 are in the tens column.
Ones PlaceThe place for the numbers 0 through 9. It's always on the far right. ➡️In the number 58, the 8 is in the ones place.
Tens PlaceThe place for groups of ten. It's to the left of the ones place. ⬅️In the number 58, the 5 is in the tens place. It means 5 tens, or 50.
SumThe answer you get when you add numbers together. It's the total! 🎉The sum of 10 + 5 is 15.
Regrouping (Carrying Over)When a column adds up to 10 or more, we carry the group of ten to the next column. If the ones column adds to 14, you write the 4 and carry the 1 (a ten) to the tens column.

Core Formulas
Line Up Rule
\begin{array}{c} \phantom{0}Tens \quad Ones \\ \phantom{0}T \quad O \\ \phantom{0}T \quad O \\ \hline \end{array}
Always line up numbers by their place value. Ones go under ones, and tens go under tens.
Add the Ones First Rule
Sum_{Ones} = O_1 + O_2 + O_3 + O_4 + ...
Start by adding all the numbers in the ones column on the right. ➡️
Regrouping Rule
If Sum_{Ones} \ge 10, carry the tens digit.
If the ones sum is 10 or more, write the ones digit of the sum and carry the tens digit to the top of the tens column.
Add the Tens Last Rule
Sum_{Tens} = (Carried \ Ten) + T_1 + T_2 + T_3 + ...
Add all the numbers in the tens column. Don't forget to add the number you carried over! ⬆️
