Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify simple shapes (squares, circles, triangles) inside a complex picture. Count groups of the same shape up to 10. Use addition to find the total number of shapes in a complex figure (up to 20). Organize their counting by looking for one type of shape at a time. Explain how a big shape is made of smaller, simple shapes. Check their counting by pointing to each shape once. Look at this cool robot! 🤖 How many little shapes do you think make up the big robot? Today, we will be detectives! 🕵️‍♀️ We will find and count all the small shapes hidden in big pictures. This helps us see how fun pictures are built. Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample Complex ShapeA big picture or object made from smaller, simple shapes.A drawing of a train 🚂 is a complex shape. It is made of circles, squares, and rectangles. Simple ShapeThe basic shapes you already know.A square 🟥, a circle 🔵, a triangle 🔺, and a rectangle 🟧. PartOne of the small, simple shapes inside a complex shape. The triangle roof is one part of a house drawing. WholeThe entire complex shape all put together. The whole house drawing includes the roof and the square bottom. TotalThe number you get when you count all the parts together. If a flower has 1 circle and 5 petals, the total is 6 shapes. Count OnA way to add by starting with one number and counting up.To add 4 + 3, you can say '4...' and then count on three more: '5, 6, 7!'

Core Formulas

One Shape at a Time Rule Count all of Shape 1, THEN count all of Shape 2. To stay organized, count all the circles first. Then, count all the triangles. This stops you from getting mixed up! Part + Part = Whole Formula (Number of Shape 1) + (Number of Shape 2) = Total Shapes Use this to find the total. Add the number of squares and the number of circles to get the total number of shapes.
