The Meaning Formula
Root Word + -less = Without the Root Word
This is the most important rule. The suffix -less always means 'without' or 'lacking'. To find the meaning of a word with -less, first figure out the meaning of the root word, then add 'without' to it.
The Part of Speech Change
Noun + -less → Adjective
When you add -less to a noun (like 'hope', 'care', or 'home'), you almost always create an adjective. This new adjective can then be used to describe another noun.
The 'Y to I' Spelling Rule
