The Capital Letter Rule
Always start the abbreviation for a month with a capital letter.
Just like the full name of a month, its abbreviation is a proper noun and must be capitalized. For example, 'January' becomes 'Jan.', not 'jan.'
The Period Rule
Always put a period at the end of the month's abbreviation.
The period shows us that the word has been shortened. For example, 'February' becomes 'Feb.' The dot at the end is very important!
The Three-Letter Rule
Most month abbreviations use the first three letters of the full name.
This is a simple pattern to remember. For 'December', you take the first three letters: D-e-c. Then you add a capital and a period to get 'Dec.'
