Key Rules & Conventions
The No Period Rule
Do not put a period at the end of a metric abbreviation.
Unlike abbreviations like 'Mr.' or 'Dr.', metric abbreviations are written without a period. For example, you write '10 g' not '10 g.'.
The No 's' for Plurals Rule
The abbreviation stays the same for one item or many items.
You never add an 's' to make a metric abbreviation plural. You write '1 gram' as '1 g' and '50 grams' as '50 g', not '50 gs'.
The Case-Sensitive Rule
Pay attention to lowercase and uppercase letters.
Most metric abbreviations use lowercase letters, like 'm' for meter and 'g' for gram. A big exception is 'L' for liter, which is an upper...
