Key Rules & Conventions
The Capital Letter Rule
Always start the abbreviation for a day of the week with a capital letter.
Because days of the week are proper nouns (special names), their short forms must also start with a big letter, just like the full word.
The Three-Letter Rule
Use the first three letters of the full day's name for the abbreviation.
This is an easy pattern to remember. For example, 'Monday' becomes 'Mon.' and 'Friday' becomes 'Fri.'. This works for almost every day.
The Period Rule
Always put a period (.) at the end of the abbreviation.
The period is a signal that the word is a shortened version of a longer word. It tells the reader, 'This is an abbreviation!'
