What & Why

Stress is your body's and mind's reaction to a challenge or demand. Think of it like an internal alarm system.Sometimes, this alarm is helpful! A little bit of stress before a big game can make you more alert (this is called eustress). But too much stress, or stress that lasts a long time, can feel overwhelming and tough on your body and mood (this is called distress). The first step to managing stress is learning to notice its clues. When you can spot the signs early, you have the power to do something about them before they get too big.

Example 1 — The Test Tummy

Alex has a big math test tomorrow and is trying to study. But it's hard to focus.Mind Clue: Alex's thoughts are racing. 'What if I forget everything?' 'I'm definitely going to fail.' He keeps re-reading the same page without understanding it.Body Clue: Alex's stomach feels fluttery and upset. His palms are a little sweaty, and he notices his shoulders are tight and hunched over his book. The Connection: The worried thoughts (mind clues) are triggering the uncomfortable feelings in his stomach and muscles (body clues). They are working together.

Example 2 — The Friendship Fizz

Maya just had an argument with her best friend over text. Now she's trying to do her homework, but she feels... off.Mind Clue: She keeps re-reading the texts, thinking about what she should have said differently. She feels a mix of anger and sadness, and can't concentrate on her history reading.Body Clue: Maya notices she's clenching her jaw without realizing it. She has a slight headache starting, and her legs feel restless and jittery, like she needs to move. The Connection: The emotional upset from the argument (mind clue) is causing physical tension in her jaw and head (body clues).
