What & Why

In individual and lifetime sports like tennis, swimming, or track, you often compete one-on-one or against the clock. But you're never truly alone! You have opponents, officials, and the rules of the game.Sportsmanship is about how you behave and treat others. Rules make the game fair and safe for everyone. The most important idea is integrity—doing the right thing even when nobody is watching. This builds character and makes the sport enjoyable for all.

Example 1 — Tennis

You're in a close tennis match with no umpire. Your opponent hits a fast shot that lands right near the baseline. You can't be 100% sure if it was in or out.Step 1: Pause and think. Your first instinct might be to call it out to win the point, but is that fair?Step 2: Apply the rule of integrity. In tennis, the unwritten rule is to give your opponent the benefit of the doubt. If you didn't clearly see it out, you should consider it in.Step 3: Make the call. You say, "Nice shot!" and play on. This shows respect and keeps the game friendly and fair.

Example 2 — Golf

You're playing golf with friends. While getting ready to putt, your putter accidentally touches the ball and it moves a tiny bit. No one else saw it happen.Step 1: Acknowledge the rule. The rules of golf state that if you cause your ball to move, it counts as a stroke.Step 2: Be honest. Even though it was an accident and no one saw, integrity means you must follow the rules.Step 3: Call the penalty on yourself. You tell your friends, "Oops, I moved my ball. I have to add a penalty stroke." They will respect you for your honesty, which is a huge part of golf.
