What & Why
Carbohydrates, or 'carbs' for short, are one of the three main macronutrients, along with protein and fat. They are your body's main and preferred source of energy. Think of them as the gasoline for your car — they make you go!There are two main types:Simple Carbs: These are sugars. They are digested quickly and give you a fast burst of energy. You find them in fruits, milk, and also in processed foods like candy and soda.Complex Carbs: These are starches and fiber. They take longer to digest, giving you a slower, more steady supply of energy. You find them in whole grains (like oatmeal and brown rice), beans, and vegetables (like potatoes and corn).Eating the right kinds of carbs at the right times helps you perform your best in everything you do, from acing a test to scoring a goal.

Example 1 — The Pre-Game Boost
Imagine you have a soccer game in about an hour. You're feeling a little hungry and need an energy boost. What should you eat?Identify the Goal: You need quick, easily digestible energy so you don't feel slow or sick on the field.Consider the Options: You could have a banana, a handful of almonds, or a slice of cheese.Analyze with Carb Knowledge: A banana is full of simple carbs (natural sugars) that your body can use for energy almost immediately. Almonds and cheese are mostly protein and fat, which take much longer to digest and won't give you that quick fuel you need right now.Make the Choice: The banana is the best choice for a quick, effective energy boost right before a game.

Example 2 — Fueling a Long School Day
It's breakfast time on a busy school day. You won't eat again until lunch, four hours from now. You need energy that lasts.Identify the Goal: You need sustained energy to focus in class and avoid feeling hungry or tired before lunch.Consider the Options: You could have a bowl of sugary cereal with milk or a bowl of oatmeal with berries.Analyze with Carb Knowledge: The sugary cereal is made of simple carbs. It will give you a quick energy spike, but you'll likely 'crash' and feel tired and hungry an hour later. The oatmeal is a complex carb. It digests slowly, releasing energy steadily over several hours.Make the Choice: The oatmeal is the better choice for long-lasting energy to get you through the morning.
