What & Why
Water is awesome for swimming, splashing, and playing! But it can also be dangerous if we don't follow safety rules. These rules aren't meant to stop your fun; they are there to make sure everyone stays safe, whether you're at a pool, a lake, or the ocean. Being 'Water Wise' means knowing how to protect yourself and your friends.

Example 1 — Pool Rules
Imagine you arrive at the town pool with your family. What are the first things a Water Wise kid does?Find the Lifeguard: Spot where the lifeguard is sitting. They are the trained expert in charge of safety.Read the Signs: Look at the rule board. It will say things like 'No Running' or 'No Diving in Shallow End.' These are important!Walk, Don't Run: The pool deck is wet and slippery. Walking prevents falls and injuries.Enter Feet First: Unless you are in a marked diving area, always go into the water feet first to check the depth and avoid hitting your head.Use the Buddy System: Never swim alone. Always have a friend or family member with you so you can look out for each other.

Example 2 — Beach & Lake Safety
Natural water is different from a pool. Let's say you're at a lake for a picnic. How do you stay safe?Check for Flags or Signs: Beaches often use colored flags to show if the water is safe. A red flag means 'Danger!' Lakes might have signs about sudden drop-offs.Wear a Life Jacket: If you're on a boat, in a canoe, or just not a strong swimmer, a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket is a must.Never Swim Alone: A grown-up should always be watching you, even if you have a buddy. This is called 'water watcher' duty.Watch Where You Step: Be careful of slippery rocks, sharp shells, or sudden deep spots.Know What to Do if You Get Tired: If you get a cramp or feel tired, flip onto your back and float. Call for help calmly.
