What & Why

Your safety gear is like a superhero's armor! It includes things like helmets, pads, life jackets, and even sunscreen and hats.We check our gear before we use it to make sure it's not broken and fits just right. A proper check-up means your gear can do its job: protecting you while you bike, swim, skate, and play!

Example 1 — Bike Helmet Check

Before you ride, give your helmet a quick check-up! It's as easy as 1-2-3.LOOK: Check the outside for any cracks or dents. Check the inside pads to see if they are in place.FIT (The 2-V-1 Rule): Put it on. There should be two fingers' space between your eyebrows and the helmet. The side straps should form a 'V' shape around your ears. You should be able to fit only one finger between the chin strap and your chin.FASTEN: Click the buckle. It should snap securely. Give it a little tug to make sure it's locked!

Example 2 — Life Jacket Check

Ready for some water fun? Let's check your life jacket first!LOOK for Rips & Tears: Check the whole jacket for any holes or torn seams. Also, look for faded color, which can mean the material is getting weak.CHECK the Buckles: Open and close every buckle and zipper. Make sure they click shut and open easily. Pull on the straps to be sure they are strong.CHECK the Fit: Put on the jacket and fasten it. It should be snug, not loose. Ask a grown-up to lift the jacket by the shoulders. It shouldn't come up over your chin or ears!
