What & Why

Your bedroom is more than just a place to keep your toys. At night, it becomes your special 'sleep cave'!A good sleep cave is cool, dark, and quiet. This helps your brain know it's time to rest, so you can fall asleep faster and stay asleep all night. When you get enough sleep, you feel happy, strong, and ready for a new day of adventures!

Example 1 — Making it Dark

Sunlight or even small lights can trick your brain into thinking it's daytime. Here's how to bring on the darkness:Block the windows: Ask a grown-up about curtains or blinds that block outside light.Turn off the big lights: This is the easiest step!Cover little lights: Turn around or cover the small lights on alarm clocks or other electronics.Use a small nightlight (if you need it): If you don't like total darkness, a very dim nightlight is okay. Try to place it where it doesn't shine right on your face.

Example 2 — Keeping it Quiet

Sudden noises can wake you up. Let's make your sleep cave a peaceful place:Close the door: This helps block out sounds from the rest of the house.Turn off noisy things: Make sure the TV, tablet, and music are off. The sounds (and lights!) can keep your brain busy.Ask for help: You can politely ask family members to be a little quieter near your room after your bedtime.Try white noise: If you can't stop outside noises (like traffic), ask a grown-up about using a fan to create a soft, gentle sound.
