What & Why
Injury prevention means taking steps to avoid getting hurt. This includes things like warming up before exercise, using proper equipment, listening to your body, and cooling down afterwards.Basic first aid is the immediate help you give to someone who is injured until full medical treatment is available. Knowing simple techniques like the R.I.C.E. method for sprains can make a huge difference in recovery.

Example 1 — Applying the R.I.C.E. Method
Imagine your friend rolls their ankle playing basketball. It immediately starts to swell and hurt. Here's how to use R.I.C.E. for this common sprain:Rest: Help them stop playing and sit down. They should not put weight on the injured ankle.Ice: Apply an ice pack wrapped in a thin towel to the ankle for 15-20 minutes to reduce swelling and pain.Compression: Gently wrap the ankle with an elastic bandage. It should be snug, but not so tight that it cuts off circulation.Elevation: Have them lie down and prop their ankle up on a pillow or backpack so it's above the level of their heart. This also helps reduce swelling.

Example 2 — Treating a Minor Cut
You're on a hike and scrape your knee on a rock. It's bleeding a little. Here's what to do:Wash your hands: If possible, wash your hands with soap and water before touching the wound to prevent infection.Apply Pressure: Use a clean cloth or sterile gauze to apply gentle, direct pressure to the cut until the bleeding stops.Clean the Wound: Once bleeding stops, gently rinse the cut with clean water to remove any dirt or debris. Pat dry with a clean cloth.Apply Ointment & Bandage: Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment and cover the cut with a sterile bandage to keep it clean while it heals.
