What & Why

Sometimes we have big feelings like being mad, sad, worried, or even super excited! These feelings can make our bodies feel wiggly, tight, or hot. Being a Calm-Down Captain means you have special tools to help your body and mind feel peaceful again. Our number one tool is our breath! Breathing slowly and deeply sends a message to our brain that says, 'Everything is okay. You can relax.' It helps the wiggly, fizzy feelings go away so we can think clearly and feel better.

Example 1 — Belly Breathing

This helps you focus on taking slow, deep breaths. Imagine a little balloon in your belly!Find a comfy spot to sit or lie down.Place one or both hands on your belly.Breathe in slowly through your nose. Feel your hands go up as your belly fills with air like a balloon.Breathe out slowly through your mouth. Feel your hands go down as the balloon gets smaller.Repeat 3 to 5 times.

Example 2 — Rainbow Breathing

This is a great way to stretch your body while you calm your mind. Let's paint a rainbow in the air!Stand up tall with your arms at your sides. As you breathe IN slowly, raise your arms out to the sides and up over your head, making a big rainbow shape. As you breathe OUT slowly, bring your arms back down to your sides.Imagine you are tracing a beautiful, colorful rainbow each time. Repeat a few times.
