What & Why

Sleep is like charging a battery for your body and brain! When you sleep, your body gets to rest, grow, and get ready for another fun day.Why is sleep so important? It helps you grow bigger and stronger. It helps your brain remember all the cool things you learn at school. It gives you energy to run, jump, and play with your friends.First graders need about 10 to 12 hours of sleep every single night. That's a lot of charging time!

Example 1 — Making Your Sleep Clock

Let's make a craft to help us see our sleep time! You will need a paper plate, two strips of paper (one short, one long), a brass fastener, and some crayons or markers.Write the numbers: Carefully write the numbers 1 through 12 around the edge of your paper plate, just like a real clock.Decorate: Make it your own! Draw a sleepy moon, twinkling stars, or anything that makes you think of a calm, quiet night.Add the hands: Use the brass fastener to attach the two paper strips to the center of the plate. The short strip is the hour hand, and the long strip is the minute hand.

Example 2 — Setting Your Bedtime

A good bedtime helps your body know when it's time to rest. Let's pretend your bedtime is 8 o'clock.Find the number 8 on your clock.Move the short hour hand so it points right at the 8.Move the long minute hand so it points to the 12. This shows that it's exactly 8 o'clock. When a real clock looks like this at night, it's time to start your bedtime routine, like brushing your teeth and reading a story.
