What & Why

Your heart is a super strong muscle in your chest. When it squeezes, it pushes blood all around your body. That push is what you feel as your heartbeat or pulse.Feeling your pulse helps you understand how hard your body is working. When you rest, it's slow. When you play hard, it's fast!

Example 1 — Finding My Pulse on My Wrist

This is a great spot to feel your pulse when you are calm.Sit down and take a quiet breath.Hold one hand out with your palm facing up, like you're holding a bowl of soup.Use your other hand's first two fingers (your pointer and middle finger).Gently press these two fingers on your wrist, just below your thumb.Be still and feel for a little thump-thump-thump. That's it!

Example 2 — Finding My Pulse on My Neck

You can often feel your pulse very strongly on your neck.Stand or sit tall.Make a 'peace sign' with two fingers (your pointer and middle finger).Gently place your fingertips on the side of your neck, right under your jawbone.Move your fingers around a little until you feel the steady thump-thump.Important: Always be very gentle when you touch your neck.
