The Hypothetical 'Si' Clause Formula
Si + [Imperfect Subjunctive], [Conditional]
This is the primary structure for talking about current hypothetical or contrary-to-fact situations. The 'si' clause (the condition) uses the imperfect subjunctive, and the main clause (the result) uses the conditional tense.
Forming the Imperfect Subjunctive
1. Start with the 3rd person plural (ellos/ellas) of the preterite tense. 2. Drop the '-ron' ending. 3. Add the endings: -ra, -ras, -ra, -ramos, -rais, -ran.
This three-step process works for both regular and irregular verbs. For example: hablaron -> habla- -> hablara; tuvieron -> tuvie- -> tuviera; hicieron -> hicie- -> hiciera.
