Grammar Rules & Patterns
Pretérito vs. Imperfecto para Tradiciones Pasadas
Use the imperfect tense for habitual or ongoing actions in the past (what *used to happen* or *was happening*). Use the preterite tense for specific, completed actions in the past (what *happened* at a particular moment).
When describing Christmas traditions from your childhood or historical traditions, use the imperfect for the general setting, repeated actions, or descriptions, and the preterite for specific events that occurred once or at a defined time within that period.

Challenging
A student wants to express a definite plan for next Christmas. They write: 'El próximo diciembre, mi familia y yo viajaríamos a México.' Why is this incorrect for stating a plan?
A.The verb should be in the imperfect because it's a tradition.
B.The verb 'viajaríamos' is conditional, implying a hypothetical situation ('we would travel'), not a definite plan. It should be the future tense 'viajaremos'.
C.The sentence needs the preterite tense because next year is a specific time.
D.The verb is conjugated incorrectly for 'mi familia y yo'; it should be 'viajaría'.
Challenging
Read the passage: 'Cuando yo era niño, la Navidad siempre era especial. Mi familia preparaba una cena enorme y nosotros cantábamos villancicos. Pero una vez, mi hermano menor rompió el adorno más antiguo del árbol.' Which statement best analyzes the use of tenses?
A.The preterite is used for all actions because they happened in the past.
B.The imperfect is used for all actions because they are memories.
C.The imperfect ('era', 'preparaba', 'cantábamos') sets the scene and describes habitual actions, while the preterite ('rompió') highlights a single, specific event that interrupted the routine.
D.The preterite ('rompió') describes the background, and the imperfect ('preparaba') describes the main event.
Challenging
