Use the preterite tense for specific, completed actions that move the story of the conflict forward.
Think of these as the main events in the story of the argument. What happened first? What happened next? For example: 'Él gritó' (He yelled), 'Yo lloré' (I cried), 'Nosotros hablamos' (We talked).
Imperfect for Background & Feelings
Use the imperfect tense to describe the setting, ongoing emotions, or what was happening in the background.
This sets the scene for the conflict. What was the mood like? How were people feeling? For example: 'Yo estaba enojada' (I was angry), 'El día era gris' (The day was gray), 'Todos sentían la tensión' (Everyone felt the tension).
