Grammar Rules & Patterns
Formula for Regular Formal Commands
1. Start with the 'yo' form of the present tense.
2. Drop the final '-o'.
3. Add the 'opposite' vowel ending: '-e' for -AR verbs, '-a' for -ER/-IR verbs. (Add '-n' for ustedes.)
This three-step process is the key to forming almost all formal commands. Using the 'yo' form is crucial because it includes any stem changes or spelling changes.
Formula for Negative Formal Commands
Place the word 'no' directly before the affirmative formal command.
To make any formal command negative, you simply add 'no' in front of the verb. The verb form itself does not change at all.
