For -ir stem-changing verbs, the stem only changes in the third-person forms: él/ella/usted and ellos/ellas/ustedes.
Imagine a conjugation chart. If you draw a line around the él/ella/Ud. and ellos/ellas/Uds. forms, it looks like a sandal or a boot. Only the forms inside the 'sandal' change their stem in the preterite.

For certain -ir verbs, the 'e' in the stem changes to an 'i' in the third-person preterite forms.
Use this for verbs like 'pedir' (to ask for), 'repetir' (to repeat), and 'sentir' (to feel). For example, 'él pidió' and 'ellos pidieron'.
