Learning Objectives
Apply rounding techniques to simplify complex numbers and expressions in word problems.
Estimate the solution to problems involving quadratic and polynomial functions before calculating the exact answer.
Use order of magnitude estimation to check the reasonableness of a calculated solution.
Approximate irrational numbers, such as square roots, to solve real-world problems efficiently.
Determine when an estimate is sufficient versus when an exact calculation is necessary based on the problem's context.
Translate complex word problems into simpler, estimable mathematical models to predict outcomes.
How can you tell in 10 seconds if a multi-million dollar project budget is wildly off? 🤯 It starts with a smart, calculated estimate!

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
EstimationThe process of finding an approximate value for a calculation or measurement. It's a balance between accuracy and simplicity. To estimate 48.9 x 10.2, you could calculate 50 x 10 = 500.
RoundingA specific technique for estimation where a number is simplified to a nearby 'cleaner' number at a given place value.Rounding the number 187.2 to the nearest ten gives 190. Rounding 3.14159 to two decimal places gives 3.14.
ReasonablenessThe quality of a solution making logical sense within the context of the problem. Estimation is the primary tool for checking reasonableness. If you calculate the cost of a t-shirt to be $5000, an estimation would quickly tell you this answer is not reasonable.
ApproximationA value or quantity that is nearly but not exac...

Core Formulas
Approximation of Radicals
To estimate \sqrt{N}, find perfect squares a^2 and b^2 such that a^2 < N < b^2. The value of \sqrt{N} is between a and b.
Use this when a word problem involves finding the side length of a square from its area, or any other situation involving a non-perfect square root. Find the two closest perfect squares to 'box in' your value.
Estimation in Scientific Notation
(a \times 10^n) \times (b \times 10^m) \approx (a' \times b') \times 10^{n+m}
When multiplying or dividing very large or small numbers, round the coefficients (a and b) to the nearest whole number (a' and b') and then apply the exponent rules. This simplifies the calculation dramatically.
Percentage Estimation
Use benchmark percentages: 10\% = \frac...
