Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify the tens and ones place in any whole number. Determine the two multiples of ten a given number falls between. Apply the rounding rule based on the digit in the ones place. Accurately round whole numbers to the nearest ten. Explain the purpose of rounding in estimation and real-world contexts. Solve problems involving rounding to the nearest ten. Ever needed to quickly estimate a total cost or a crowd size without exact numbers? 🤔 Rounding helps us make quick, smart guesses! In this lesson, you'll learn the essential skill of rounding numbers to the nearest ten. This skill is crucial for making estimations, simplifying calculations, and understanding approximate values in everyday situations, which is especially useful when working with pro...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample Place ValueThe value of a digit based on its position in a number (e.g., ones, tens, hundreds). In the number 345, the digit '4' is in the tens place, meaning it represents 40. Tens PlaceThe position of a digit in a number that represents groups of ten.In the number 78, the '7' is in the tens place. Ones PlaceThe position of a digit in a number that represents single units. In the number 78, the '8' is in the ones place. RoundingThe process of approximating a number to a specified place value, making it simpler to work with.Rounding 23 to the nearest ten gives 20. Nearest TenThe multiple of ten (e.g., 10, 20, 30, 100) that a given number is closest to.The number 47 is nearest to 50. Multiple of TenA number that can be divided by ten with n...

Core Formulas

Identify the Target Place Value Locate the digit in the tens place of the number you want to round. This is the digit that will either stay the same or increase by one, depending on the next step. Look at the Decision-Making Digit Examine the digit immediately to the right of the tens place (the ones place). This 'decision-making' digit tells you whether to round up or down. Rounding Up Rule (5 or More) If the digit in the ones place is 5 or greater (5, 6, 7, 8, 9), increase the digit in the tens place by one. All digits to the right of the tens place become zero. This rule applies when the number is closer to the next higher multiple of ten. Rounding Down Rule (Less than 5) If the digit in the ones place is less than 5 (0, 1, 2, 3, 4), keep the digit...
