Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify the seven basic Roman numeral symbols and their corresponding Arabic values. Apply the additive principle to correctly convert Roman numerals to standard (Arabic) numbers. Apply the subtractive principle to correctly convert Roman numerals to standard (Arabic) numbers. Convert standard (Arabic) numbers up to 3999 into their Roman numeral equivalents. Recognize and avoid common errors in forming and interpreting Roman numerals. Explain the historical context and modern applications of Roman numerals. Ever wondered how ancient Romans wrote numbers? 🤔 What if you saw 'MCMXCIX' on a building – could you tell what year it was? In this lesson, you'll unlock the secrets of Roman numerals, learning to read, write, and convert them. Under...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample Roman NumeralsAn ancient numerical system used by the Romans, consisting of seven basic symbols (I, V, X, L, C, D, M) that represent specific values.I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000 Standard (Arabic) NumeralsThe decimal number system we use today, based on ten digits (0-9) and place value.1, 2, 3, 10, 100, 1000 Additive PrincipleWhen a Roman numeral of smaller value follows one of larger value, their values are added together.VI = V + I = 5 + 1 = 6; LX = L + X = 50 + 10 = 60 Subtractive PrincipleWhen a Roman numeral of smaller value precedes one of larger value, the smaller value is subtracted from the larger value. This only applies to specific pairs.IV = V - I = 5 - 1 = 4; XC = C - X = 100 - 10 = 90 Repetition RuleA Roman numeral symbol (I,...

Core Formulas

Basic Roman Numeral Values I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000 These are the fundamental values for each Roman numeral symbol. Memorizing these is the first step to understanding the system. Additive Rule If a symbol of smaller value follows a symbol of larger value, their values are added. (e.g., $AB = A + B$ if $A > B$) This rule is applied when numerals are arranged from largest to smallest, or when a smaller numeral is to the right of a larger one and not part of a subtractive pair. Subtractive Rule If a symbol of smaller value precedes a symbol of larger value, the smaller value is subtracted from the larger value. (e.g., $BA = A - B$ if $B < A$ and $BA$ is a valid subtractive pair) This rule is used for specific combinations (IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, CM...
