Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
IntegerA whole number (not a fraction or decimal) that can be positive, negative, or zero. Examples: ..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...The numbers -5, 0, and 12 are all integers.
Opposite (Additive Inverse)The number that is the same distance from zero on a number line but in the opposite direction. When you add a number and its opposite, the sum is always zero. The opposite of 7 is -7. The opposite of -10 is 10.
SubtractionAn arithmetic operation that represents the removal of objects from a collection, or finding the difference between two numbers. With integers, it often involves finding the distance and direction between two points on a number line.5 - 3 = 2. In integer subtraction, 3 - 5 = -2.
Number LineA visual representation of numbers as points on a straight li...

Core Formulas
The 'Add the Opposite' Rule for Subtraction
$A - B = A + (-B)$
To subtract an integer, you change the subtraction sign to an addition sign and then change the subtrahend (the second number) to its opposite. Then, you follow the rules for adding integers. This is often remembered as 'Keep, Change, Change' (KCC).
Subtracting a Negative Integer (Double Negative)
$A - (-B) = A + B$
When you subtract a negative integer, it's the same as adding the positive version of that integer. The two negative signs 'cancel out' or combine to become a positive sign.
