Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify positive and negative integers within a set of numbers. Calculate the absolute value of any integer. Apply the rules for adding two integers with the same sign. Apply the rules for adding two integers with different signs. Use a grouping strategy to efficiently add three or more integers. Solve real-world problems involving the addition of multiple integers. Ever wonder how to keep track of money when you earn some, spend some, and then earn more? 💰 Or how to calculate temperature changes when it rises, drops, and rises again? 🤔 In this lesson, you'll learn how to add not just two, but three or more integers together. This skill is super important for understanding finances, temperatures, elevations, and many other situations where quanti...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample IntegerA whole number (not a fraction or decimal) that can be positive, negative, or zero.... -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3 ... Positive IntegerAn integer greater than zero. These are usually written without a sign or with a '+' sign.5, 12, +7 Negative IntegerAn integer less than zero. These are always written with a '-' sign.-4, -9, -20 Absolute ValueThe distance of a number from zero on the number line, always expressed as a positive value. It's denoted by two vertical bars around the number.|-5| = 5, |7| = 7 SumThe result obtained when adding two or more numbers. The sum of 3 and 5 is 8. Number LineA line on which numbers are marked at regular intervals, used to visualize and understand the relationship between numbers, including integers.A line w...

Core Formulas

Adding Two Integers with the Same Sign `a + b = |a| + |b|` if `a > 0` and `b > 0`. `a + b = -( |a| + |b| )` if `a < 0` and `b < 0`. To add two integers with the same sign (both positive or both negative), add their absolute values. The sum will have the same sign as the original integers. Adding Two Integers with Different Signs `a + b = \text{sign of the integer with the greater absolute value} \times ( |a| - |b| )`, where `a` and `b` have different signs. To add two integers with different signs (one positive and one negative), subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger absolute value. The sum will take the sign of the integer that had the larger absolute value. Grouping Strategy for Adding Three or More Integers `\text{Sum} = (\text{Sum of all...
