TermDefinitionExample
Mixed NumberA number consisting of a whole number and a proper fraction.2 1/2 (two and one-half)
Improper FractionA fraction where the numerator (top number) is greater than or equal to the denominator (bottom number).5/2 (five-halves)
NumeratorThe top number in a fraction, indicating how many parts of the whole are being considered. In 3/4, 3 is the numerator.
DenominatorThe bottom number in a fraction, indicating the total number of equal parts the whole is divided into.In 3/4, 4 is the denominator.
ProductThe result obtained when two or more numbers are multiplied together. The product of 2 and 3 is 6.
Simplest FormA fraction is in simplest form when its numerator and denominator have no common factors other than 1.1/2 is the simplest form of 2/4.

Core Formulas
Converting a Mixed Number to an Improper Fraction
$a \frac{b}{c} = \frac{(a \times c) + b}{c}$
To multiply mixed numbers, first convert each mixed number into an improper fraction. Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and place the result over the original denominator.
Multiplying Fractions
$\frac{a}{b} \times \frac{c}{d} = \frac{a \times c}{b \times d}$
Once all numbers are improper fractions, multiply the numerators together and multiply the denominators together.
Converting an Improper Fraction to a Mixed Number
$\frac{N}{D} = Q \frac{R}{D}$ where $N \div D = Q$ with a remainder $R$.
After multiplying, if the product is an improper fraction, divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient becomes the whole number, the remainder be...
