TermDefinitionExample
Mixed NumberA number consisting of a whole number and a proper fraction (e.g., $3 \frac{1}{2}$).In the problem 'A recipe calls for $2 \frac{1}{4}$ cups of sugar', $2 \frac{1}{4}$ is a mixed number.
Improper FractionA fraction where the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator (e.g., $\frac{7}{2}$).The mixed number $3 \frac{1}{2}$ can be converted to the improper fraction $\frac{7}{2}$.
NumeratorThe top number in a fraction, representing the number of parts being considered. In the fraction $\frac{3}{4}$, the numerator is 3.
DenominatorThe bottom number in a fraction, representing the total number of equal parts in the whole. In the fraction $\frac{3}{4}$, the denominator is 4.

Core Formulas
Converting a Mixed Number to an Improper Fraction
$a \frac{b}{c} = \frac{(a \times c) + b}{c}$
To multiply mixed numbers, first convert each mixed number into an improper fraction. Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and place the result over the original denominator.
Multiplying Fractions
$\frac{a}{b} \times \frac{c}{d} = \frac{a \times c}{b \times d}$
Once both mixed numbers are improper fractions, multiply the numerators together and multiply the denominators together. Simplify the resulting fraction if possible.
Converting an Improper Fraction to a Mixed Number
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole number part, and the remainder becomes the new numerator over the original denominator.
After multiplying, if...
